GMOs: How is this Affecting Us?
Dr. Robert T. Fraley
As Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Fraley oversees Monsanto’s worldwide integrated crop and seed technology and research. Growing up on a small Midwestern farm that produced grains and livestock, Dr. Fraley pursued science and graduated with a B.S. and Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Illinois. Completing postdoctoral research in biophysics at the University of California-San Francisco, he was hired by Monsanto in 1981 as a research specialist in the Biological Sciences Program.

Ms. Kim Allman
Corporate Trainer and Business Office Manager at Rose Acre Farms, Inc., Ms. Allman has over 14 years of experience with employee development. She has had extensive experience in creating, promoting, and delivering training solutions designed to support an organization’s business plan. Ms. Allman is a certified client facilitator for Franklin Covey’s Seven Habits for Managers and is passionate about creating an enjoyable work environment that supports learning.
Dr. Don Beermann
As a 1971 lowa State University Department of Animal Science graduate, Dr. Beermann seized the opportunity to return as the Chair in 2015. Completing a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he had joined the faculty at Cornell and then became the Animal Science Department Head at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Appointed a Director within the UNL Office of Research, he was also the Interim Director of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
AEB Grows Egg Consumption
Ms. Joanne Ivy
The President and CEO of the American Egg Board, Ms. Ivy started as the Director of Industry Relations in 1986. She has served as the Chairman of the International Egg Commission (IEC). She was instrumental in helping establish IEC’s International Egg Nutrition Consortium, the Corporate Social Responsibility Working Group and the International Egg Commission Foundation. In 2005, Ms. Ivy was named “The International Egg Person of the Year.”
Egg Processing and Value-added Opportunities
Dr. Tong Wang
The Director of Graduate Education for Food Science and Technology at lowa State University, Dr. Wang’s research focuses on chemistry, processing and utilization of various food-chain products. Specific egg-related research includes yolk lipid and protein separation, phospholipid extraction and its oxidation and emulsification, detection of trace quantity of yolk in white, egg white foaming and foaming enhancement, and improving the thermal stability of egg proteins.

Salmonella Control: Past, Present, & Future
Mr. Steve Boomsma
Serving as Chief Operating Officer for Centrum Valley Farms, Mr. Boomsma has been involved in egg processing and production since 1978. Over the years, he has gained expertise in egg processing, production, compliance, sales and marketing, quality assurance and food safety. Mr. Boomsma spent time consulting around the United States before starting Centrum Valley Farms in 2011. He currently serves on the UEP Producer Committee for Animal Welfare and the UEP Environmental Committee.
Salmonella and Eggs: What Do We Really Know?
Dr. Tim Frana
Dr. Frana is an Associate Professor and Bacteriology Section Leader at the lowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. He received a D.V.M. degree from lowa State University in 1985 and practiced in Nevada and Arizona until 1999. Dr. Frana received two M.S. degrees-the later in Public Health from the University of Arizona in 1999. With a Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology from lowa State University in 2004, he was employed with USDA-APHIS until accepting his position with ISU in 2008.
Beyond the global food safety initiative: what’s next?
Mr. Earl Dotson
President/CEO of Praedium Ventures, LLC and Validus Verification Services, LLC, Mr. Dotson oversees two ISO 9001-2008 certified companies that assist food chain organizations and producers by providing specialized services at the farm level. Services focus on social responsibility in the areas of animal welfare, environment, food safety, worker care and biosecurity. Prior to Praedium and Validus, Mr. Dotson was Vice President of Education, Environment, and Production Research for the National Pork Producers Council.
A Beginner’s perspective of cage-free housing system management
Mr. Mark Oldenkamp
As Vice President of Northwest operations for Valley Fresh Foods located in Woodburn, Oregon, Mr. Oldenkamp oversees all aspects of egg production in Oregon and Washington. His Oregon State University education set the stage for a career in agriculture. Mr. Oldenkamp earned his B.S. in animal science and his M.S. in poultry science from OSU. He is a board member of both AEB and UEP. He is a past chair of the AEB Industry Program Committee and is the current chair of the UEP Animal Welfare Producer Committee.
Genetic Improvement For Alternative Hen Housing
Dr. Neil O’Sullivan
Currently the Director of Research and Development for Hy-Line International, O’Sullivan leads all genetic research on breeding, molecular genetics and genomics for Hy-Line Pedigree lines. Under Dr. O’Sullivan’s direction, HyLine International has expanded the pure-line farming basis to allow for bird evaluation and selection for long cycle performance. Dr. O’Sullivan received his M.S. in Genetics from University College, Dublin, Ireland and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
China Egg Production And Research Trends
Dr. Ning Yang
The Department Head for Animal Genetics and Breeding at China Agricultural University, he has co-authored over 100 publications. Dr. Yang serves as the Director of the National Engineering Laboratory of Animal Breeding. He is the Chief Scientist for the Chinese National System for Layer Production Technology, one of the Chinese Agricultural Research Systems (CARS). Receiving his Ph.D. from Beijing Agricultural University, he currently serves as the China Branch President of the World Poultry Science Association.

Mr. JOE KERNS
President of Kerns and Associates, Joe Kerns has 30 years’ experience working with producers, suppliers, and mills to support agricultural operations. He and his team assist clients with procurement and risk management activities for industry leaders such as ADM, Premium Standard Farms, Continental Grain, and Iowa Select Farms.

Mr. Marcus Rust
The CEO of Rose Acre Farms, Mr. Rust witnessed the building of the first millionbird inline caged facility in 1974. Today, Rose Acres owns the first three million bird cage-free facility. Growing up on the farm in the southern hills of Indiana, every aspect of the egg business and row crop farm was done the old-fashioned way first. Before 1966, Rose Acres never had caged hens, but by 1976, they had closed the last cage-free house. Mr. Rust believes it has all come back to its roots, but there is a lot to relearn during the move forward.
Mr. Maro Ibarburu
An Associate Scientist-Business Analyst for the Egg Industry Center at Iowa State University, Maro Ibarburu produces monthly market reports and special market reports for the U.S. egg industry. He provides the U.S. economic data to the International Egg Commission and also analyzes data needed for EIC research projects and responses to stakeholders. Ibarburu holds an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University.
CSES Results and Consumer Decision-Making
Mr. Charlie Arnot
With more than 25 years of experience in communications, public relations and issues management within the food system, Arnot is often sought for his communications and speaking abilities. Arnot is founder and president of CMA, an employee-owned consulting firm and also serves as CEO of the Center for Food Integrity, a national non-profit organization dedicated to building consumer trust and confidence in today’s food system. Arnot graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor’s in Journalism.
