Economic Perspective for the EU Egg Industry

Dr. Peter van Horne

Dr. van Horne is a senior researcher at the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI). LEI is part of Wageningen University and Research Center located in the Netherlands. Peter graduated from Wageningen in 1984, with a degree in farm economics. His job is devoted to poultry research for the national government, EU, European Parliament, international organizations and the entire egg industry. Since 2007 he has served as the economic analyst for the International Egg Commissions.

CSES Flock One Preliminary Findings

Dr. Darrin Karcher

Darrin is a graduate from The Ohio State University, University of WisconsinMadison and earned his Ph.D. at Purdue University in 2007. Darrin has applied his education to the industry as the Poultry Extension Specialist for Michigan State University. In this role, Darrin works with backyard flock owners as well as commercial producers. He is chair of the Poultry Science Association (PSA) Committee on Animal Care and served on the World Poultry Science Association board of directors. In 2010, Darrin was recognized by PSA with their Early Career Award for Extension.

Clarifying the Confusion and Uncertainty

Mr. Chad Gregory

Chad is the President and CEO of United Egg Producers (UEP). UEP represents 95% of the U.S. egg production. He spent many years learning the programs and policies of UEP and now all of his time managing those interests within the U.S. and on the International Egg Commission. Chad earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Marketing and one in Management from Southern Illinois University in 1993. Chad is happily married to Amy and between them they have four children.

California Market Realities: A Food Retailer’s Perspective

Mr. David Fikes

David Fikes is Vice President, Communications and Consumer/Community Affairs for Food Marketing Institute, the trade association for supermarkets, grocery stores and all venues of food retail. His areas of responsibility – which embrace consumer research, animal welfare issues, and overcoming the contemporary challenges of communication – all feed his fascination with people and deepen his curiosity about how we think, feel, interact and convey our values. Prior to his position with FMI, Fikes served as the Director of Communication for the American Frozen Food Institute. Before entering the world of food trade associations, he worked for 20 years as an Episcopal priest, serving parishes in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. Fikes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas and a Masters of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

 

American Egg Board Drives Increased Egg Demand

Ms. Joanne Ivy

The President and CEO of the American Egg Board, Ms. Ivy started as the Director of Industry Relations in 1986. She has served as the Chairman of the International Egg Commission (IEC). She was instrumental in helping establish IEC’s International Egg Nutrition Consortium, the Corporate Social Responsibility Working Group and the International Egg Commission Foundation. In 2005, Ms. Ivy was named “The International Egg Person of the Year.”

Hen Housing Conversion: What comes with it?

Mr. Tom Lohr

As director of domestic and international poultry sales with Henning Construction Company, and CEO of Iowa Cage Free, Mr. Lohr has built a prominent reputation in the egg, and poultry industries. Lohr has helped in the design process and construction of 16 new hatcheries and 3 million bird pullet rearing and laying complex in China. Lohr is highly accomplished in the areas of strategic planning, team building, and biosecurity.

Mr. Al Koch

The CEO of Henning Construction Company, Al is in charge of the management, strategic planning, domestic and international marketing, international pricing, and construction management activities at Henning Construction. He has been involved with work in China, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Japan and Cameroon West Africa. A graduate in Business and Psychology he spent six years in the lowa Army National Guard and time as a Texas Highway Patrol Officer.

Dr. Bernie Beckman

Bernie received his D.V.M. at Purdue University and went to work as a Technical Service Veterinarian for Hy-Line International upon graduation. Now a 20year veteran, Bernie is Hy-Line North America’s Director of Technical Services. His responsibilities include qualifying chick shipments for Hy-Line International, day-old chick distribution for Hy-Line North America and on-farm evaluation and improvement for Hy-Line’s internal programs for food safety, management and welfare.

Understanding the Microbiology of Hen Housing Systems

Dr. Deana Jones

Deana is a Research Food Technologist in the Egg Safety and Quality Research Unit of the USDA, Agricultural Research Service in Athens, Georgia were she has worked for 14 years. Her work includes examining the impacts of egg production practices, shell egg and egg products processing methods, and rules and regulations on egg safety and quality. Deana completed degrees in Animal Science, Food Science and Physiology at NC State University. She has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and over 90 proceedings.

FSMA Progress Update On FSMA Rules

Mr. Oscar Garrison

Director of Food Safety for UEP, Oscar served as the Georgia Department of Agriculture Division Director for Food Safety and as Assistant Commissioner of Consumer Protection. He has served as the President of the Association of Food and Drug Officials and President of the Georgia Association of Food Protection. In 2012, Oscar provided a keynote address for the Washington, D.C. located Food Safety Summit. There he discussed the importance of the industry and public health officials working together.

An Overview of the FSMA Proposed Rule for Intentional Adulteration

Mr. Jon Woody

Jon is a Senior Food Defense Analyst with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition located in College Park, Maryland. Jon has extensive experience working both domestically and internationally on food defense issues and has worked collaboratively with government and industry stakeholders all around the world. Previous to his current position, Jon was the Director of FDA’s Foreign Food Inspection Program. He holds a Masters Degree in Food Science from Penn State University.
