Challenges and Opportunities: Findings of a German survey study on colony and avairy systems

Dr. Lars Shrader
Don Bell Memorial Lecturer

Dr. Schrader is currently in charge of the Institute of Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry in Celle, Germany. This is one of eleven institutes of the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health which belong to the Federal Minstery for Food and Agriculture. The research objective of the institute is to improve farm animal welfare by evaluating and refining husbandry, transport, stunning and slaughter procedures. Dr. Schrader’s research covers mulitple species and analyzes animal behavioral demands, the development and validation of indicators for animal welfare, and an animal’s mechanisms of adaptation towards environmental challenges. His results have been published in 25 international, peer reviewed papers that address laying hens.

Flock health and other challenges in cage-free and outdoor environments

Dr. Karin Kreyenbuhl

A graduate of veterinary school in 1999 from the University of Zurich, Dr. Kreyenbuhl now serves as Vice President of the Swiss Association of Poultry Medicine and the Swiss Branch of WPSA. Dr. Krevenbuhl previously studied E.coli infections in lavers at the University of Zurich. In 2007, she took over a private poultry practice that serves producers throughout Switzerland. Dr. Kreyenbuhl also serves as a lecturer of poultry disease at Aviforum.

Risk factors for laying hen keel bone damage

Dr. Maja Makagon

Currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California – Davis, Dr. Makagon’s research focuses primarily on poultry behavior and its environmental impact. She has co-authored twenty peer reviewed articles and her contribution to poultry research already has been recognized by the receipt of three awards. Dr. Makagon is an active member of the Poultry Science Association Committee of Animal Care.

Mr. Chris Ordway

Executive Director of One Egg, Mr. Ordway is committed to providing “more eggs to more kids” with a commitment to serving struggling communities economically, socially, and spiritually since 2013. Currently serving 5,000 children throughout eight different countries, Mr. Ordway still finds time to serve as a partner at Manana Capital Private Equity and works with a group of Christian investors who build sustainable businesses.

Mr. Joe Kerns

President of Kerns and Associates, Mr. Kerns has 27 years experience working with producers, suppliers and mills to support agricultural operations. Prior to his consulting venture, he directed risk managemet activties for industry leaders such as ADM, Premium Standard Farms, Continen tal Grain and Iowa Select Farms. Mr. Kerns currently has clients in 13 states including packers, producers, veterinarians, researchers, mill operations, and feed ingredient suppliers.

Dr. Anna Concollato

A researcher and 200-technician in the Poultry Science Technology Department at FACCO, Dr. Concollato graduated with her Ph.D. in 2014 from the University of Florence. Dayto-day responsibilities for Dr. Concollato include improving animal welfare and management operations for FACCO customers. She spends most of her time in FACCO cage-free pullet and layer systems in Italy and throughout the United States.

The world’s largest producer of modern poultry equipment, FACCO studies, designs and manufactures turnkey technology solutions for today’s producers of meat and eggs.

Mr. William Huelsewiesche

A second-generation Farmer Automatic employee, Mr. Huelsewiesche recieved his degree in electrical engineering, Growing up on a farm with a traditional belt battery pullet and layer system, he is a great asset in helping Farmer Automatic through the changing demands of cage-free housing systems including input on everything from facility configurations, mechanical design lighting and training.

Farmer Automatic develops efficient, innovative systems with the intent of making feeding, watering, manure disposal and egg collecting easier and more cost effective.

Mr. Bill Snow

Mr. Maikel Veron

Previously holding the position of Area Sales Manager in Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom, Mr. Veron was recently promoted to Vice President of North American Sales for Vencomatic. He is a 2002 graduate from HAS University of Applied Sciences earning a Business Administration and Agribusiness degree. He began his involvement within the poultry industry serving as a salesman for Shippers Bladel BV and Kanters Special Products.

Vencomatic offers solutions for housing, egg handling and climate control for all types of poultry houses worldwide. They focus on innovative alternative solutions for poultry production.

 

Mr. Derrick Ament

Mr. Ament graduated in 2005, with a Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering from Penn State University. Starting as ValCo’s technical support manager, he has held many positions within the company and now serves as Director of Egg Industry Sales. He works daily to ensure high customer satisfaction with Val-Co’s products. Ament has contributed significantly to the development and execution of Val-Co’s sales strategies.

Generating poultry production systems that are de signed to fit the needs of any producer’s operation, Val-Co is proud to enable producers to operate more efficiently.

 

Air quality and emission mitigation strategies and research needs for cage-free housing

Dr. Hongwei Xin

A Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor at Iowa State University, Dr. Xin works in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and Animal Science Departments specializing in animal production systems engineering. He also serves as the Director of the Egg Industry Center, and is Assistant Dean for Research within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Dr. Xin received his B.S. degree in Shenyang Agricultural University in China, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska. Many of his 60 former advisees currently hold positions in industry or university and govern-ment institutions in the U.S. or abroad. Dr. Xin has authored/co-authored over 500 publications and has presented in over 16 countries. He is a member of many academic, industry, and government scientific advisory boards or task forces at state, national and global levels.

Roles of Wild Birds, Rodents, and insects in the spread of HPAI

Dr. Kyoung-Jin (KJ) Yoon

Dr. Yoon is a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at lowa State University. He is a ACVM-board certified veterinary virologist and the Section Leader of Virology and Molecular Microbiology at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. He also acts as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and as a Guest Professor at the Qingdao Agricultural University in China. Dr. Yoon has published more than 150 refereed publications and authored 18 book chapters.

Biosecurity Audits: When and How

Dr. Elena Behnke

Currently serving as a Veterinary Medical Officer with the USDA and Veterinary Coordinator for the National Poultry Improvement Plan, Behnke oversees 100 authorized laboratories across the USA and facilitates numerous training workshops for veterinarians. She worked as a member on the Field Reports Cell for the National Incident Command Task Force during the HPAI outbreaks of 2014-2016, along with hosting the nation’s first AI Auditor Certification Workshop.
