Dr. Michael David
Don Bell Memorial Lecturer
Dr. Michael David is the Director of International Animal Health Standards for USDA-APHIS Veterinary Services. In his role working with internal and external stakeholders, he seeks expert input to develop unified technical responses to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) code. Dr. David also reports all disease events of significan impact to the OIE. His past work with APHIS includes working as a Veterinary Medical Officer in the Delmarva Peninsula. He has served on the SE taskforce and also assembled a biosecurity manual for use by field personnel on poultry farms. Dr. David was born in Guatemala and can speak three languages. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Hamilton College in New York. He earned a Masters in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Maryland and then a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He then obtained a Masters of Public Health from the University of Minnesota.

Mr. JOE KERNS
President of Kerns and Associates, Joe Kerns has 30 years’ experience working with producers, suppliers, and mills to support agricultural operations. He and his team assist clients with procurement and risk management activities for industry leaders such as ADM, Premium Standard Farms, Continental Grain, and Iowa Select Farms.

Dr. Janice Swanson
A Professor and Director of Animal Welfare, Dr. Janice Swanson is jointly appointed in the Departments of Animal Science and Large Animal Clinical Sciences at Michigan State University. She coordinates outreach, teaching and research in the area of farm animal welfare with focus on social rsponsibility in the food system. Swanson received a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
Dr. Larry Sadler
Dr. Larry Sadler is the Vice President of Animal Welfare for the United Egg Producers. Dr. Sadler works with stakeholders to find innovative solutions that advance the health and well-being of hens. Dr. Sadler previously served as head of animal welfare for Kraft Heinz and holds degress in Agricultural Business, Animal Science, Animal Physiology, and Biomedical Sciences from Iowa State University.
Dr. Don Hoenig
Dr. Don Hoenig is the Senior Veterinarian Advisor for the American Humane Association’s Farm Program. He is also owner of One Health Veterinary Consulting, LLC. Before joining AHA in 2014, Hoenig worked in mixed animal practice and was a USDA Veterinary Medical Officer, State Veterinarian and State Public Health Veterinarian in Maine. He obtained his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Matt Jones
Matt Jones is the Vice President of Operations for Validus a firm conducting audits for animal welfare, environment, feed mills, food safety, worker care and help, and acts as a certifier for SQF. Joes is a certified auditor and instructor and has worked with audit programs since joining the company in 2003. Jones has a B.S. in Animal Science from Iowa State University.

Dr. Michael David was already introduced as the Egg Forum’s Don Bell Memorial Lecturer. He works for the United States Department of Agriculture – Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services Unit where he serves as the Director of International Animal Health Standards

Mr. Mark Van Oort
As the General Manager of Versova’s Iowa operations, Mark Van Oort oversees the day-to-day care of the company’s laying hens and processing operations. As a 14-year employee, Van Oort has witnessed development of many of the procedures needed to manage today’s egg farms. Van Oort grew up on a rural Iowa farm working with cattle, horses and dogs. He is a graduate from Buena Vista University and his passion for agriculture resulted in his career path with the egg industry.

Cage-free Research Update
Dr. Hongwei Xin
The University of Tennesee Dean of AgResearch, Dr. Hongwei Xin previously served the egg industry for 25 years at Iowa State University. He was the founding director of the Egg Industry Center and a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and Animal Science Departments. Dr. Xin received his original degree in China, then his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska.
Understanding focal duodenal necrosis in egg layers
Dr. Monique Franca
Dr. Monique Franca is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to her time there, she completed a residency in Avian Diagnostics and Production Medicine at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Franca is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and Poultry Veterinarians.

Practical implications of a 20-year poultry manure application study
Dr. Michelle Soupir
As an Associate Professor in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University, Dr. Michelle Soupir’s research program focuses on sustainable water systems with an emphasis on nonpoint source pollution control, watershed management, and water quality monitoring. Obtaining her B.S. at Kansas State University, she obtained both her M.S. and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. Dr. Soupir started with ISU in 2008.

Stabilizing egg quality in longer laying cycles
Dr. Petek Settar
An applied geneticist with Hy-Line International, Dr. Petek Settar works on quantitative genetics, experimental deign and data analysis in applied research and breeding. She obtained her Ph.D. in Agricultural Animal Breeding at Ege University in Turkey and worked as a research assistant there. She moved to the U.S. and into a postdoc position at Iowa State University, then joined Hy-Line in 2002.

Attracting and retaining employees in rural areas
Ms. Tammy Jensen
President and co-owner of Jensen, Maas & Associates, Inc. dba agriCAREERS, INC® Tammy Jensen has a strong background in agriculture including growing up on an Iowa farm feeding chickens and collecting eggs. Today, Jensen holds 30 years’ experience encompassing all phases of ag recruiting covering crops, livestock, banking and the food industry. Jensen holds a B.S. in Business from the University of Northern Iowa.

Mr. Maro Ibarburu
An Associate Scientist-Business Analyst for the Egg Industry Center at Iowa State University, Maro Ibarburu produces monthly market reports and special market reports for the U.S. egg industry. He provides the U.S. economic data to the International Egg Commission and also analyzes data needed for EIC research projects and responses to stakeholders. Ibarburu holds an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University.
